Happy Holidays and a Prosperous New Year for 2024, and Good Health to you and your families for a fantastic year at Experts Exchange

Many Thanks for all the VMware and Virtualization questions I've answered this year on Experts Exchange, and for making EE the Number 1 Original Tech Community Online. I've really enjoyed being there for you answering your questions, and completing so many articles and videos for you which can be found listed here, and it was fantastic to see EE return to it's roots - "About Bloody Time", and fab to be invited to Core Conference 2023, and meet with other fab Experts.

In what has become Andy's EE tradition, which is becoming more difficult with the demise of Microsoft Silverlight!

I've extracted all your "EE names" and input them into http://www.tagxedo.com/app.html - we've now developed Cloud based apps now to do this very quickly! (Tagxedo is old it still supports Silverlight!), I'm not sure we will be using Tagxedo next year, we are finding it difficult to find a Silverlight enabled PC today!

if you want to see a VMware video, let me know, and we will see what we can do.

So that just leaves me to say...

I spent last week at Building Business Capability (BBC), the largest annual gathering of business analysts and business architects. The event is run by the International Institute of Business Analysis™ (IIBA®), a professional association for the global community of business analysis professionals.

Business Analysts (BAs) typically work as liaisons between the technology and business groups in an organization. They define needs and recommend solutions that deliver value to stakeholders and that enable positive change in their organizations.

Scott standing outside the Speaker Ready Room at the BBC conferenceThough I’ve never held the job title of Business Analyst, most of the work I’ve done over the years has been at the intersection described above – the boundary between business and technology. I've always had a foot in both worlds, consequently, I’m very comfortable sharing knowledge with and learning new things from people in the BA community.

I first spoke at BBC in 2018 and have presented there annually since, with the exception of COVID-induced interruptions.

I'm  grateful to EE for sponsoring a portion of my travel costs this year as part of the Reconnect program.

Do you work with Business Analysts? Or are you a BA in your organization? I’d love to hear about your experience with or as a BA.

Scott, what were some new products that used AI for this?

Excellent question, Scott. There was a lot of talk and some demonstrations of gen AI in the conference sessions, including the opening keynote. However, I didn't see a lot of evidence on the exhibit floor. For context: This is a mid-sized trade show, and still recovering from the pandemic. Consequently, the exhibit area was smaller than in the before times. There were about two dozen vendors, about half of whom were product companies. The other half were education and consulting providers. Most of the vendors offer digital transformation, process documentation/mapping/automation, and business rules solutions. I didn't spend a lot of time with any one vendor but there wasn't as much obvious gen AI activity as I'm sure there will be in a couple of months.

I arrived in time for my first workshop Sunday at the Microsoft 365 Conference in Las Vegas. It was a great workshop, as well as the second workshop Monday. The conference starts tomorrow, Tuesday, May 2, 2023. Looking forward to some great sessions. If there are any EE members here besides me, send me a message and let's get together.

So as I'm sure that you know, I've now produced over 35 tutorial videos for Experts Exchange on VMware vSphere 7.0 and 18 tutorial videos on VMware vSphere 8.0 which released in October 2022.

You can find the lists here

https://github.com/CodheadClub/AwesomeResources/blob/master/Virtualisation.md#andrewhancock

So I've learnt two skills in 2022, although really I'm always learning new skills, the first skill is using GitHub correctly and successfully using Markup language, submitting PR and tracking issues.

The second skill for 2022, I used to use Adobe Premiere Pro/Sony VEGA for video production, but we've switched now to Blackmagic Designs Davinci Resolve (FREE version available), it's been in at the deep end with this, and learning a new video editting suite for 2022, to help produce new tutorials for 2023.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

I am getting the end of the year lack of motivation and am in need of a ski trip.  So I asked AI to come up with a song called losing my motivation sung to the toon of losing my religion and also asked for some album art . Here it is:

JasperArt_2022-12-21_08.55.06_upscal.png
Verse 1:
I was walking the line, aiming for my goals,
Branching out and taking all kinds of roles.
But I found myself losing, I had no zest,
My motivation seemed to go away from me like a thief in the night.
Chorus:
Oh no, I'm loosing my motivation, can't find what I need.
It's like a waning flame that's burning low and fast.
Oh no, I'm loosing my motivation, don't know what to do.
Can't find the spark that will light up my destiny.
Verse 2:
Thought I'd take this challenge but things aren't working out,
Needed ambition but it wasn't showing up, yeah.
I'm feeling stalled out and don't know where to go next,
Gonna try and get back on track with a real hard reset.
Chorus 2:
Oh no, I'm loosing my motivation, can't find what I need.
It's like a waning flame that's burning low and fast.
( repeat )
Bridge:
You gotta keep on pushing though you're tired and sore,
'Cause finding motivation isn't easy anymore.
Chorus 3:
Oh no ,I'm loosing my motivation , can’t find what I need .
(repeat)

I improved my skills related to the tech stack I had this year. Involved in some project discussions and developed a PWA application. I also shared the knowledge to the fellow community members and solved their problems. It is a great pleasure to give solutions to the members when needed. Keep rocking EE

Greetings.

I learnt about various types of real-time problems that doesnt occur in day-to-day work, specially when the work is monotonous.  Not only about problems, but best possible solutions to the problem by experts on this platform.

Apart from above, I used to learn something about SQL writing along with Cloud platform in recent months.

EE is the best, since 1996.

Followed Topics is getting an upgrade!!
In the next few weeks, we will be releasing some big improvements to how following topics works in EE. What does following a topic do? Why do members follow topics?

Topics are like small communities inside of the larger EE community. You can use them to find and create content, and connect with like minded peers.

As members of EE, you are either skilled in a topic, interested in learning about it, or just looking for some help to grow. So, it’s important that you have an easy way to indicate exactly which topic areas you want to participate in and which ones you only want to see content in.

Here’s what you need to know about the first update:

😀 We are making it easier to find content you’re interested in learning about, or want to contribute in, by updating the ways in which you follow topics.

💌 In this first of many updates, following topics will only have a direct effect on Questions, but it will be tied to all types of content in the future!

🔔 We’re updating your communication preference options so that you will now be able to indicate what content you want to see, and how you want to be notified about it on a topic by topic basis.

Stay tuned! Leave a comment below ⬇️ with any questions or comments!

Cool personal story that illustrates the practical benefits of having a peer to peer network as a go to resource. Well, kinda personal, it's about my mom, or mum, for my British friends 🙃

She's a Financial Analyst who practically lives in Excel & wants to learn more Power BI. Very smart, & very good at her job. 💯

She was putting together a massive report for upper management that would greatly improve the way they forecasted yearly budgets.📈One tiny little thing in the spreadsheet was off, but it was messing up all the data. After hours of trying to tweak it & research on her own, she turned to other members of the Excel community here on EE. 👩‍💻

It took some in depth conversation, but they helped her identify & fix what was causing the problem. As you can imagine, she was THRILLED.🤩

Best part? When she presented it to upper management, they said, "Wow, how on earth did you figure this out...? This report will be a game changer." With the help of some people across the globe who she now considers peers and colleagues 🌏

Oh, no wait, BEST part? She wants to help other members & share her knowledge in the same way they helped her. ❤️

Anyone have a similar story? Lemme know⤵️

Why do we embrace students in the EE community?

It's simple. We were all students once, and in many ways, we always will be.

As a community, we strive to support students who are working to obtain their degree and start their career in technology. Remember our community mission? We believe that when we work together to learn and grow, we can have a positive impact in the most influential industry in the world.

Working together includes supporting, encouraging, and mentoring the next generation. It means we have the unique and honorable opportunity to have a lasting impact on the people who will fill our shoes one day and who will continue our legacy.

What better way to have a positive impact in the most influential industry in the world than to equip and empower those who will continue the work we started?

I am not an SEO expert, so would love to know why this happens. Our company released a new article the other day about Students in the EE community. I was checking to see how it was ranking and this was what I found; when searched, google doesn't pull any EE content after the branded first link, DuckDuckGo and Brave have the student article but also expanded to more EE content.

Student Article ranked #:
page 11 (?) on Google
page 1, 4th result on DuckDuckGo
page 1, 2nd result on Brave

Does someone know how to explain this?

I feel like this would be a good question to ask :)

The other year Rob and I shared with each other that Google has not been showing the best results for quick tech help and DuckDuckGo was better.

Make sure you are trying different options when searching google. Try the same search in different browsers where you are not logged in or use a private browser and see if the results change slightly. They have for me.  As example my main chrome browser logged in as expert.

chromeloggedin.png

Edge logged in as Mod
mod.png
Chrome private browser
private.png
chrome private duckduckgo
duck.png
One thing I am seeing is DuckDuckGo is focusing in the domain https://www.experts-exchange.com and Google is focusing on the domain go.experts-exchange.com.

I am also seeing confusion of the logged in and logged out view.  The first MS Edge organic result links to https://go.experts-exchange.com/ee-for-students.  If you go to that page logged out, you get
student2.pngIf I go to that page logged in, I am at my dashboard.

Now search for, experts-exchange.com student membership and it shows up though that landing page shows up before the article does
full-search.png
What I noticed is if you are logged out in a private browser start here https://go.experts-exchange.com/. Now hit CTR-F and search for the word "student". It is not there. I wonder if having a direct link on that home page would help.

I would also not get caught up in this type of searching. Instead, research how students are looking for help. semrush, ahref's can help.  Are they asking siri or hey google "where can I get answers for my COSC 102 class?" or is it a pythong or C# type of question common to new students?  Are they searching using their phone, tablet or laptop?  Highschool or College?  Should you be targeting, "Free student help" or something similar?

The takeaway is how you are searching is going to be much different than how your potential members are going to be searching.  You want them to find something they didn't know existed and you are trying to find something that you know exists.  Even if you find it with your route, that does not mean it will be found by how those potential members will find it.

I meant to add if you are searching with Google, "experts exchange student" in a private browser, then add a space after student like you are going to add something, the autocomplete does suggest "program" as the first option.

I would also agree with what Randy just posted. It does feel like the results are skewed against EE. Do the same search with Stack Overflow Student and the results are more favorable. But also notice that the naked domain shows up ahead of the meta. subdomain.
