Client's print spooler going offline and online and offline again? Just upgraded your Print Server to a new Windows OS? Then this article is for you!

Prepare for Deployment

When preparing to upgrade a print server be aware of differences in the printer driver models. There are v3 and v4 print drivers. Not all drivers are created equal!

When deploying a new Print Server on Windows Server 2016, 2019, or later make sure to use v4 print drivers across the board.

Post Print Server Setup Troubleshooting

The driver on the client is probably not the same as the one on the print server!

Part of the problem is that vendors don't label the drivers accordingly so one, or the other, or both can get installed.

  1. The first place to start is to note all printers set up on the print server.
  2. Then, note the drivers and their versions in Print Management.
  3. Go to the vendor's site for each and download the correct, and consistent, version for each printer.
  4. Stop the print spooler and remove/clean all of the print drivers.
  5. Start the print spooler.
  6. Install each driver one by one and verify that one client gets the updated print driver and can print without issue.
  7. Proceed to finish the rest.

Remote Desktop Services Printing

If deploying print drivers in a Remote Desktop Session Host setting, make sure to set all drivers to Isolated in Print Management on all Session Hosts. This helps to keep the print subsystem stable.
