Currently working deskside support with a team of about four other techs at three different locations about 10 to 30 miles apart. We originally had a team of around 7 techs and supported up to 6k users total for the three locations...after layoffs over three years, this number dwindled to around 1k users. The user's have a helpdesk they call as first point of contact as well as getting help from a second level phone support and from their department business support--before we even help them so most of the problems we work on are the harder problems that the helpdesk level 1 and level 2--or the other department business support cannot resolve.
Have been trouble shooting computer problems since 1988 when I got my first 286 desktop from Dell...you know, the one with the toggle switch key sequence to slow it down from 12Mhz to 8Mhz, Lima Oscar Lima
Have worked many different IT positions:
1990 to 1993:
Owned business doing computer repair for home users and small businesses, got married...and had to make more money, so...
1993 to 1995:
Worked tech support for Canon Computer Systems Inc. both in printer dept then in computer department...the old Canon laptops with the bubblejet built in...left here when all 80+ tech support people found out from a news press release that the support dept was being moved to the east coast.
1995 to 1997:
After Canon, worked as tech support and then as a Novell Network Admin for a smaller sized laptop manufacturing company using Novell 3.11 and then an NT40 server used for POP mail( NTMail)...back then the conversation regarding Widows NT was usually, "I'm using NT40 for our mail server, the usual response was NT40 what?
1997 to 2000:
For a small( about a dozen technician/engineers) Network Contract Support company doing everything from setting up servers to providing simple desktop support for several of the local hospitals while working with the existing IT support at these locations. One memorable moment was helping to install a 2 terabyte storage unit at a HuntWesson ( Conagra) food corporate office...not sure what it cost, but it took a small crane and measured about 6' tall x 8' wide x 3' deep...and the techs at the time, were in awe at this monstrous 2( yes 'two') terabyte storage unit =)
2000 to 2005:
Got invited to work for the same owner of the small laptop manufacturing company I worked at before in another of his companies. Spent five years here setting up and maintaining everything from fixing printers to setting up and maintaining the Internet connection, firewall, exchange server, misc file servers, backup server, SOX, etc, etc.
